During the summer Dr. Irvine and Dr. Stephen Vermette took three undergraduates to Malaysia for a field course that was conducted jointly with Dr. Firuza Mustafa and 30 Geography majors from the University of Malaya and this provided a wonderful introduction for our students to a predominantly Muslim culture.
Dr. Kim Irvine from the Geography and Planning Department led a group of 10 undergraduates on a two-week field course in Thailand during the January, 2011 intersemester.
A minor in Asia Studies has been established and will be offered starting in the Fall, 2010 semester. The Geography and Planning Department supports the minor through its regularly scheduled classes (GEG 360, Geography of Asia; GEG 461 Issues in Southeast Asia Environment and Sustainable Development) and its field courses in Southeast Asia.
