Professor of Geography, within the Department of Geography & Planning at SUNY Buffalo State. My teaching interests are in physical geography; specifically meteorology, climatology, and water-related issues. Courses taught include: Meteorology (GEG/GES 241), Applied Climatology (GEG 386), Severe & Unusual Weather (GEG 383), Quantitative Methods (statistics) (GEG 390), Cavern studies (GEG 120), as well as The Bahamas Field Experience (GEG 345) and Arctic Geography (GEG 359). Serves as faculty advisor for the student club: ‘Informed Students Addressing Climate Change’.
Current activities revolve around local meteorology and climatology issues, with a more recent focus on climate trends in Western New York - “Weathering Change in WNY”. Also, working on projects related to meteorology-related interpretations of Charles E. Burchfield’s watercolors (Weather Event), and the science of Alexander von Humboldt, with a specific interest on his meteorological research and his connection to Buffalo, NY.
Full member of the American Meteorological Society (Treasurer of the WNY Chapter), and member of the National Weather Association. Past co-coordinator of the New York Geographic Alliance, and currently serving as Research Director of the NYGA Project ‘B-Wet Upper Susquehanna Project’’. Received the National Council for Geographic Education Distinguished Teaching Achievement Award in 2006, the Buffalo State President's Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2010, the 2011 Virginia Figura Award in recognition of distinguished service to geographic education in New York State, and the 2013 Burchfield Penney Art Center’s ‘Esprit de Corps Award’ for Weather Event, an exhibition of Burchfield’s water colors as interpreted from a meteorological perspective.
