Urban and regional planners develop long-term and short-term plans to use land for the growth and revitalization of urban, suburban, and rural communities, while helping local officials make decisions concerning social, economic, and environmental problems. Graduates from the Urban and Regional Planning program are prepared for professional positions in, for example, local, state, and federal government agencies, non-profit agencies, and in private industry.
Recent graduates have obtained employment with government agencies such as U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Erie County Department of Environment and Planning, Orleans County Planning and Development Department, Town of Amherst, Town of Orchard Park; non-governmental organizations like Forever Elmwood, Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transportation Council, Buffalo Erie Niagara Land Improvement Corporation, and Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo; and private industry like Parsons Engineering, GHD Consulting Services, Peter J. Smith & Company, Nussbaumer & Clarke, and Uniland Development. Majors also are fully prepared to pursue graduate studies.
